The small seeds of this Native American wildflower, Oenothera biennis L. (fam. Onagrace) contain about 14% of a fixed oil of which 70% is cis-linoleic acid and 9% is cis-gamma-linoleic acid (GLA). Essential fatty acids are necessary for human health, but the body can’t make them.you have to get them through food. However EPO is high in essential fatty acids which provide the building blocks for cell membranes and a variety of hormones and hormone-like substances.

  • Patient who take an anticoagulant (blood-thinning) such as warfarin (Coumadin) were not advisable to take EPO because with evening primrose oil there is a higher risk of bleeding. Other drugs that may thin the blood and also be a problem taken alongside with EPO are clopidogrel (Plavix) and aspirin.
  • People who have epilepsy or other seizure disorder should avoid taking evening primrose oil because it may increase the chances of having a seizure. Besides that people with schizophrenia treated with certain drugs may be at risk of seizure, so medical advice should be sought.
  • Apart from that evening primrose oil should not be taken within two weeks of going for a general anaesthetic because it can increased bleeding risk.
